Camp Sunshine’s Events Coordinator, Ashley Riley, made such a compelling case to South Portland High School and South Portland’s Mahoney Middle School that she earned two JOY grants worth $2000 from the JMG students. Mahoney’s Richard Luther, Secretary of the Officer’s Association, emphasized the importance of grant applicants making a persuasive case, knowing the answers to questions from potential funders and taking the time necessary to fully convey the passion inspired by doing great community work. “Without Ashley’s commitment to her organization and her ability to inspire others to give, we might have made another choice,” he said upon presenting Ashley with the JOY grant. “If you had asked any of us as individuals what we would have done with spare cash prior to JOY, the answer would have been very different than what it would be now – now we know that sharing resources with worthwhile nonprofits is an excellent use of money.”
Camp Sunshine provides a full summer camp experience for children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families on beautiful Sebago Lake. The JOY grants support the cost of camp operations as the stay is free for campers.
