The five JMG programs at Messalonskee High School, Waterville High School, Winslow High School and Winslow Junior High School pooled their grant funds and brain power to take the JOY program to a whole new level.
Rather than working with just the $5000 in total grant dollars provided by the JOY funding partners, the students raised an additional $3000 and are positioned to award $8000 to Central Maine nonprofits.
The 200 participating students researched area organizations and voted on their top ten, which were invited to present and make their cases to the assembled students at Messalonskee’s Performing Arts Center. Students ask detailed questions of the presenters about how programs impacted commuities and how the grants would make a difference.
The students voted on their top five choices awarding $1600 grants to each of those who made the best case: the Waterville Humane Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pine Tree Society, Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter and Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers.
