History

Jumpstart Our Youth (JOY) was created by the Unity Foundation in 2009 to teach Maine’s young people about the important role philanthropy plays in meeting local needs.   The local focus echoes the dedication of Unity Foundation founder, Bert Clifford, who spent a lifetime driving local solutions to improve the business climate, local education and a host of community needs in his hometown of Unity, Maine.  Bert died in 2001 leaving his assets to benefit his community through the foundation; and his story, in addition to the stories of other philanthropists, is a cornerstone of the Jumpstart Our Youth curriculum.

“This program is a wonderful collaboration between Maine students, their communities and the non-profit organizations that serve them. The process was organized and the online application is an efficient way to tell our story. Thank you for helping us to take care of our families.”
