Portland High School Students VolunteerStudent Philanthropy Impacts Maine Economy
Giving in the second program year (September 2009 - June 2010) increased to $61,000 through 90 grants. Final results are still being compiled addressing the number of youth and community memebers impacted by the program this year.

In its inaugural 2008-09 school year, Jumpstart Our Youth provided over $50,000 through 72 grants to nonprofits across Maine that provide services to youth. The nonprofit organizations receiving funding ranged from after-school programs, food pantries, recreation facilities and domestic violence awareness. Together these programs serve approximately 12,800 young people and families. Awards ranged from $100 to $1000.

The 2,100 participating students collectively spent over 11,000 hours in the Jumpstart Our Youth program, volunteering locally. Based on minimum wage, their work equates to an additional $85,000 in human resources. Add the “sweat equity” to the grant equity and JOY contributes a statewide impact of $150,000.
