Start thinking about an issue that may be important to you: homelessness, hunger, domestic violence, etc. and follow the issue. For example, use Google to find “Food pantries in Waldo County,” “Homeless shelters for Maine families,” “Organizations that prevent domestic violence in Aroostook County.”
Ask family, friends, churches, teachers if they know of organizations addressing those issues.
Call your local town office and ask if there is a community organization that deals with the issue.
If you are unsure of the issues that interest you and you want to get an idea for the types and numbers of organizations, try the Maine Association of Nonprofits.
